1. Write a Short Story

You may be amazed at how fun it is to write a story when you get to choose the genre and cast of characters. You no longer have to wait for your English teacher to assign you the task of writing a modern sci-fi adventure starring yourself as the lead protagonist. You can write it now! You may be surprised how the outline and structure you’ve learned during class comes to life. The struggle of finding your introduction, conflict, and resolution may come naturally. This activity will come in handy when you’re thinking about what to do when you’re bored at home alone.

2. Take an Online Driver’s Ed Course

You can learn to drive while you are bored at home! In some states, you do not have to sit in a classroom to get credit for taking a driver’s ed course. For California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, and Nevada, you can take driver’s ed online! You can log off and on as often as you like and complete the course at your own pace. For FL, IN, and KY, where the state time requirement is only 4 hours, you can even finish the course in one sitting if you like! 3. Play Scrabble

This game has been around since 1933 and is still a favorite board game among teens and families! For almost a century the game has created competition of the wits across the globe. Try tallying how many words you and your competitor challenged each other to look up per game and see how many words you learned each day! Was it more than you did in English class? For those of you who are competitor-less, try playing against yourself! Give “Player 2” an evil name like “Corona,” or that of your ex. No cheating necessary.

4. Bake Something from Scratch

Cooking is one of the most educational yet fun things to do when bored! Going to school, studying, and football practice may have stopped you in the past from developing your culinary skills. Now you can unleash them! Once you learn the basics, you’ll be surprised what you can do. Oh, and you may have heard that the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but did you know the same rings true for women? Girls of all ages find it endearing when their date cooks for them. Learning a new recipe is one of the best things to do when bored for guys and girls! 5. Learn a New Language

Learning a new language has been on the list of top teen activities for years. For those who are already studying a different language in school, you can step away from the conjugation overload and focus on knowing where to place the accent and roll the “R.” You can also enjoy getting ahead of the lesson plan so when you go back to school, you’ll sound like a native speaker. For those who did not pick a language as an elective, you can start off casually by learning how to say a few words and your favorite phrases in a different language. There are also many online tools and apps that can assist you as well, such as Duolingo or Spanishdict.

If driving a car down a long, windy road towards the beach comes to mind as one of the things to do when bored, but you do not have your driver’s license yet, then taking a free DMV practice test can make it happen! This process is fairly rigorous compared to that of most states, but it is simple to follow. Most teens complete it with little or no difficulty, granted they take the time to learn the required material.

It is always possible things might go wrong especially early in a teen’s driving career. Even the most responsible and level-headed teens can make mistakes. In New York, the penalties for moving violations for drivers under 18 are severe, particularly those involving excessive speeding or cell phone use while driving. If this has already happened, a state-approved defensive driving course can significantly mitigate the impact of teen driving mistakes and mishaps.

New York Learner Permit

The ultimate goal for teens who want to earn the right to drive unsupervised is a drivers’ license, and the first step toward that goal is to acquire a New York State Learner Permit. Learner permits allow new drivers to operate a vehicle under the supervision of another driver who is over the age of 21 and licensed for the type of vehicle being operated. This means a new motorcycle driver must be supervised by a licensed motorcycle driver. New drivers cannot drive even if properly supervised in the following locations:

Once a teen acquires a Learners Permit, the process to gain a full drivers’ license in New York depends primarily on the age of the driver. Under no circumstances can a driver under the age of 16 get a license. Drivers 16-17 years old can apply for a Junior Drivers’ License (Class DJ), which is like a Learners Permit but may allow the young driver to operate a vehicle unsupervised in some parts of New York under the Graduated License Law (described below).

The process for acquiring a Junior Drivers License is similar to that of acquiring a Senior License. New drivers must take a pre-licensing class and pass both a written test and a road test at a New York DMV office. It’s not strictly necessary but highly recommended that a new driver make an appointment for both tests and make use of the appropriate area of the NY DMV Website for specifics on classes certified by the NY DMV in preparation for the tests. Having recently made a road trek from New York to Tennessee, (I will NEVER do that again) this topic was bandied about over a morning smoke (he did, I didn’t), two days ago in the hotel parking lot. A Tennessee transplant from South Jersey lamented over his hometown when he spied my NY tags, (front license plate and back – thank you).

While Uncle Andy whined about how much he missed his soft pretzels, pizza and hoagies, he relished the fact that the government “don’t bother you too much in these parts”. “In fact”, he boasted, “you only need one plate on your car”. It sparked an interest as I pondered the surgeon general’s warnings about second-hand smoke.

How many states require front license plates?

Thirty-one states require their motorists to display front license plates and plates on the back of their vehicles. The “Rugged Nineteen” states that require only one plate include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico. North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Some of these states do not even require a state safety inspection, (but we’ll save that one for another article).

The front plate law debate doesn’t center around government intervention but rather considers the aesthetics of the vehicles’ lines and the obstructive value attributed to the addition of a front plate. HOW IT LOOKS. Seriously though, the more cerebral debaters stick to the nuts and bolts of the matter (You’ll need twice as many nuts and bolts in my state). Come calamity, accident or amber alert, it is easier to identify the vehicle and its registered owner if there are two markers. In other words – dragnet can roger that whether the roadster is coming or going.

What are the advantages of having a front license plate?

One debater makes the case that if they were being followed they’d need to see a front plate in order to report it. Two plates makes life easier and safer for everyone. You run the risk of getting ticketed and if you purchase in a state that doesn’t require two to one that does…(another snafu). You might end up at a great traffic school though so not all bad. If you don’t want to be stopped unnecessarily this one warrants research. No matter how regal the ride you can always have your car manufacturer tell you how to comply with your particular states’ regulations with little or no pain.

Interestingly enough, the one plate debate is pretty even all over our land. When I think California I think laid back. Not like Uncle Andy, but “laid back – chic”. Even so Golden Staters pipe up just as much as everyone on this issue. Blame Hollywood, but Californians are imagined to be mad about their cars, In reality, California doesn’t crack the top ten in vanity plate purchases. See, I told you laid back – chic. California drivers ed is pretty relaxed as well.

Overall we don’t want a world where our road mates are highway phantoms in our rear-view mirror. They may be carrying an authentic hoagie or soft pretzel. Might be a Golden State Warrior.

California is, unarguably, the worst state to drive in. Between the beaten down country roads and the catastrophically congested city traffic, it’s easy to absolutely lose your sanity. The only thing that seems to be worse than driving in California is driving in the worst cities in California. Wallethub.com conducted an intense survey that ranked the worst and best cities to drive in.

No surprise that California had several hotspots on the list, more than any other state. So, if you recently passed your California Driver’s Ed class, it may be best to steer clear of these. It may even be smart to take a detour around the cities listed below. However, if you do find yourself in one of these cities, may God have mercy on your soul.

The survey gathered more than just the driving conditions. It compared other factors, such as road maintenance, vehicle wellbeing, traffic amount, and car safety. Here are the worst cities in CA for driving:

17. Irvine

Irvine is the best of worst cities in California for driving. Nestled in Orange County, the area is known for its balloon rides, children’s museum, and – now – its devastatingly horrendous driving statistics. Irvine? More like Erk-vine! This place really erks drivers.

16. Sacramento

Sacramento isn’t just the capital of California. It’s the capital of being a horrible place to drive through. Fun fact about Sacramento, in 2014 the fatality rate for drivers was 7.6/1,000 drivers.

15. Riverside

Riverside is a city just outside of Los Angeles. The city maintains a vibrant life of professionals and residentials, which is ironic, because driving through it makes you feel lifeless.

Fresno is the 5th largest city in California – by land mass. That means, there’s plenty of room to demonstrate how horrible of a city it is to drive in. Between lack of maintenance shops, highway navigation, and vehicle related crimes, this city is understandably ranked among the worst cities to drive in. Doing a quick Google search will give you nothing but car related crimes.

13. Chula Vista

Chula Vista is a city just south of San Diego. The city has a nice brewery scene, which could account to why all the drivers are terrible. The only thing more beautiful than the neighborhoods are the how horrible the road systems are.

The first bay city to make the list is Fremont. It’s beautiful docks bring in plenty of ship crewmen and sailors, which is most likely why everyone seems like they can’t drive on land.

Bakersfield is baking with atrocious drivers. The city straddles the Kern River just north of Los Angeles and also straddles the traffic that goes through the area. Driving through Bakersfield is similar to parking your car in a large parking lot – the traffic won’t move.

10. Anaheim

Anaheim, the city, might get a pass for this one. The reason why traffic is horrendous is because of the massive tourist magnet that is Disneyland resort. Populating the area with out-of-towners, the resort brings nothing by doom, mayhem, and family fun with a charm.

San Diego is the southernmost metropolis of California. It’s area engulfs nearby cities, towns, and neighbors. It’s traffic is no different. 8. Santa Ana

The second city on this list from Orange County is Santa Ana. It’s known for two things: not being Irvine and it’s high crime. Traffic conditions aside, this place doesn’t have much to drive to.

Stockton is a quiet are. Driving through the city you can hear the native sounds of honking and yelling as drivers become peeved driving through the area. It’s music to the locals ears. Aside from that, they’re also known for their museums.

Ah, yes. There’s nothing more alerting then the white-hot fury that comes from being cut off at a traffic light. It’s usually followed by a series of screaming and livid words directed at the culprit. Being angry seems to be a natural part of driving – especially when driving in New York. A defensive driving course will teach you how to drive defensively, and could help you control your anger if you know what to look for.

Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what road rage is. We all express rage in different ways. Therefore, how we express our rage on the road is going to be unique to ourselves. That’s why we’ve created an extensive list of the top road rage definitions to describe the forms of anger you’d see and to be cautious of.

Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving is the most common form of road rage. When someone peeves you while on the beat path, it’s easy to drive less defensively. Some signs of an aggressive driver are less patient road maneuvers, driving a little too close to others, and passive aggressive honking. Passive aggressive honking is sometimes worse than angry honking. Try not to drive too closely to these guys.

Habitual Road Rage

Some people are just angry all the time. When you continuously do something, it becomes a habit. For some people, they might not realize how often they’re raging on the roads, because it’s become their habit. Habitual road rage is when a driver has developed a routine of being rageful while driving. It’s expected they’ll tailgate, because they blame others for their misery. Don’t’ upset a tailgater by frequent stops. It’s best just to change lanes.

Situational Road Rage

Have you ever encountered the sweetest person, but, when the car in front of them isn’t paying attention to the street light, they turn into a monstrosity? That’s the situational road rager. They don’t make it a habit of being angry, because they shove all those rageful feelings down – until someone cuts them off in traffic. During these instances they see nothing but red and snap. These drivers are not as easy to steer clear of, but do your best not to tick others off by following the rules of the road.

Tailgating

We’re all familiar with that jerk driving the pickup truck in your rearview mirror. They get too close to the back of your car, because that’s their way of telling you to “speed up.” Nobody enjoys tailgaters. What’s worse is tailgating is seen has a commonality of driver’s everywhere. What people don’t understand is tailgating is a form of road rage. As mentioned before, change lanes and let them pass.

Gesturing

Ever had your window down only to catch the driver next to you flipping you a bird? Gesturing can come and go in your life in a moment’s notice. Often, it’s prompted by doing something reckless. Other times, it could be a person just blowing off some steam. Try not to let these gestures upset you and encourage your inner road rager. Don’t take it personally, and move on.

Brake Checking

Brake checkers are the tailgaters worst enemy. They suddenly stop in the middle of the road, when they notice someone is driving too close to them. The goal is to have the other vehicle rear end them, starting an altercation at the rear-enders fault. The brake checker might feel justified in their actions, but, in reality, they’re just as bad as any other road rager. Don’t let them infuriate you! Change lanes. Hopefully your exit will appear shortly.

Leering and Staring

The leerer or starrer is the creepy ghoul of the road raging family. They’ll talk behind you, when you least expect it. Their only motif is to communicate some sense of anger to you, from behind the wheel of their car. If you’re stopped at a light and notice someone watching you, you could be encountering a leering driver who is ragefully whispering curses under their breath at you. Do not be hypnotized by those hushed tones. Keep your eyes on the road and your head in the game.

New CA Traffic Laws Effective July 1, 2018

The rules of the road are changing constantly. They make up the ever-expanding book of laws that keep people in line… or should we say “lane?” These are the basic and rudimentary topics you would cover in any California Driver’s Ed class. There’s been some construction on the ol’ road rules book, and, as of, July 1st, 2018, the updates are being implemented.

Although you might have heard the contrary, rules are not meant to be broken. When they are, there’s online traffic school. But, if you would like to steer clear of paying large fines and bad moods, then read on to learn about the latest updates. We’ve outlined everything you need to know about the newest CA traffic laws that went into effect July 1st, 2018.

The Seatbelts on the Bus Rule

Back in the day, there were seatbelts on all the school buses. However, the people who would wear them were made fun of or they were considered to be the uncool kids. Now, they scoff and laugh at their harassers who must follow the merciless laws bestowed on California citizens as they sit, securely, on the bust strapped in by seat belts.

Here’s the breakdown.

This law makes riding in public vehicles and transporting people, safer for the passengers. What this means for you, the passenger, is huge. You must wear a seat belt on a bus. It also means that parents, legal guardians, chartering parties, and children of particular ages must be properly restrained in the seat or holder.

It also means that bus drivers must inform all patrons of the newest law. If the passenger doesn’t follow the instructions, they will personally be fined – not the driver. The idea of the law is to increase the safety of passengers on the bus.

The DUI Tolerance Limit

Driving after drinking any amount of alcohol is a bad idea. Driving while impaired will cause catastrophic damage to people’s lives. It lowers your reaction time and increases the chances of you destroying property or crashing.

The DUI limit is very low, running at about .08 blood alcohol concentration. Now, the DUI is lowering the bar (the only time that’s a good thing). As of July 1st, 2018, the legal driving limit, while driving a passenger for hire, will be .04 blood alcohol concentration.

So, what exactly is a passenger for hire?

Passenger for hire describes the services from commercial drivers. Therefore, people working for Lyft and Uber are examples of commercial drivers. They can no longer operate the vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of .08. It’s scary to think that there are people drinking and driving you around at night – and you pay them to do it!

Private Carriers of Passengers

Among the newest laws to the Golden State are the laws regulating authority and insurance. Sacramento CBS reported, “The DMV will now issue certificates for intrastate authority and verify proof of liability insurance, while CHP will regulate compliance and the safe operation of the vehicles.” If you don’t know anything about traffic laws, this sentence might sound like we just casted a spell on you.

The law simply issues new regulations for private vehicles transporting passengers. Again, safety is important and is kept in mind when creating new laws to dictate how we operate on the road. This one is technical and convoluted; however, it allows regulators to observe compliance and safety operations of vehicles.

Saturday Service at DMV Offices

This isn’t a new law, but people will begin losing their minds when they find out that Ventura, Sacramento, and Salinas DMV offices will now be in operation on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Now, the 9 to 5’er will rejoice as they can spend their Saturday mornings standing in line at the DMV.
